About:
Two of my completed research projects dealt with the molecular-based detection and population structure analysis of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola, the rice bacterial leaf streak pathogen and Mycosphaerella fijiensis (anamorph Pseudocercospora fijiensis), the causal pathogen of black Sigatoka of banana. Rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive PCR-based detection methods were developed for the two pathogens that allow the early detection of the pathogens from infected plant samples, thus, have potential utility in plant quarantine and in epidemiological studies on the two diseases. The population structure studies provided a clearer understanding of the genetic structure and dynamics of the pathogen populations in the Philippines as well as a deeper insight into the evolutionary processes that shaped the pathogen populations.
Description of extension project involvements, trainings conducted, other extension activities such as lectures, reviews, webinars, etc.
My recent extension activities include serving as: Resource Speaker in the symposium “Advances in Biotech R & D: Uncovering the Different Applications of Biotech in Agriculture & Food Science” sponsored by DA-Biotech, Resource Person in the write-shop “Philippine National Biological Materials of Concern List Write-shop II: Towards an NBMC Program” sponsored by the Anti-terrorism Council – Program Management Council, Office of the President, Malacañang and Trainings on “Plant Health Care for Trade Facilitation” sponsored by the Asian Development Bank, and Reviewer of the scientific paper “Molecular characterization, cross-infection potential and fungicide sensitivity of Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae responsible for the recent outbreak of mango bacterial black spot disease in Ghana submitted for publication in Archives of Phytopathology and Plant Protection.
